When Old Man Winter bears down there’s nothing like a great glass of red wine. Especially if you can find the magical combination of ripe fruit, savory earth and a long finish. Even better if you can find that wine for a under $15. Portugal has been known to deliver some mind-bending quality at ridiculously low prices and we’re leaning on the Iberian Peninsula again for another outrageous buy.
A recent discovery for our Team was the Monte de Ravasqueira winery in sunny Alentejo Portugal. This Family owned estate uses 250 acres and 30 unique vineyards to craft a wide variety of wines. None more impressive than their Guarda Rios Red Blend in the 2020 vintage. A captivating wine that upon first sniff commanded everyone’s attention. Blended from Aragaonez, Syrah, Trincadeira and Alicante Bouchet aged in neutral oak barrels for approximately eight months prior to bottling. This wine stuns for the price.
In fact, it earned a Platinum badge & 97 points in the Decanter World Wine Awards in a crowded field of contestants. This underdog wine shunned many labels going for several multiples of it’s own price tag. We loved it for it’s bold, ripe fruit coupled to soft tannins and classic old world touches. The oak is subtle but present in a way that makes you warm right up on these chilly nights. This is a very drinkable style that’ll please both old & new world fans alike … all for a pittance. |
